Preparing for Your IUD Appointment

Watch: What to Expect With Your IUD Procedure

Before Your Appointment

A little preparation can help make your IUD procedure more comfortable and less stressful.

Take your ibuprofen as directed

If you can safely take ibuprofen, we recommend taking it before an IUD insertion.

Please follow the medication instructions provided by our office. Do not take additional ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications unless instructed.

If you cannot take ibuprofen, that's okay. Let us know and we can discuss other options.

Eat and drink normally

You do not need to fast for your IUD procedure. We recommend eating a normal meal and staying well hydrated before your appointment.

Plan for some cramping

Cramping and light bleeding or spotting can happen after an IUD insertion.

You may want to bring a panty liner or pad with you. Most people can return to their usual activities afterward, but it's also reasonable to keep the rest of your day lighter if you can.

Considering nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is available as an optional comfort measure during your procedure.

If you're considering nitrous, please see the additional information below on nitrous.

Tell us if there's anything we should know

Please send us a message through the patient portal before your appointment if:

  • You've had a difficult IUD insertion or pelvic procedure in the past

  • Pelvic exams are particularly difficult for you

  • You're very anxious about the procedure

  • You have questions about pain management

  • There's anything else you'd like your provider to know

You don't need to explain why. We just want to know how we can best support you.

Next: Review the nitrous information below if you're considering it, then complete your required forms in the patient portal.

Optional: Pro-Nox™ for Comfort

We offer Pro-Nox™ as an optional comfort measure during IUD procedures.

Pro-Nox™ is a 50/50 mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, similar to “laughing gas.” You breathe it yourself during the procedure, so you control when and how much you use. You remain awake and able to communicate with us the entire time.

Pro-Nox can help with anxiety, relaxation, and discomfort, but it does not guarantee a pain-free procedure. The effects work quickly and wear off quickly after you stop using it.

Complete Your Forms

Before your appointment, please log in to the patient portal to review and complete your required forms and consent.

Completing these ahead of time gives you a chance to read everything without feeling rushed and helps us keep your appointment running smoothly.

Completing a consent form does not mean you have to proceed with the procedure. We'll answer any remaining questions and confirm that you still want to move forward before we begin.

Please complete your forms before your scheduled appointment.
